Mahalakshmi was determined to get Vishnu as Her Lord and achieved the aim when the milk ocean was churned. Lord Vishnu responding Her love for Him took Her on His left lap and sat on a lotus flower.
The temple was built in the 16th century by the Kartar dynasty kings of Mysore.
The Kalinganardhana idol (Lord Kirshan dancing on the head of the five headed snake Kalinga is very beautifully made by the sculptors. Despite the age, the idol still looks very new. It is said that those facing problems from the enemies may worship Kalinganardhana Krishna to win over them.

Devotees go round the stoopi on Thursdays and Saturdays seeking child boon.

There are only a few Vishnu temples in Tamilnadu with the Lord appearing in a sitting form and this is a temple of this kind. During the Poornima days (full moon days) Sudarshana Homas, Bagyasutharam, Navagraha Homa, Santhana Mahalakshmi Homa are performed. A bhajan also is performed in the evening. Hanuaman and Navaneethakrishnan grace in the stoopi facing the Lord and Garuda and Vinayaka are facing South.
