Why is worshiping the family deity necessary? - Explanation by Kanchi Maha Periyavar:
Worshiping the family deity is a common practice in many families. If we worship our family deity, we can overcome our suffering and attain happiness. But who is the family deity? The family deity is the god worshiped by our ancestors.
Kanchi Maha Periyavar's explanation on the importance of worshiping the family deity:
Once, a person approached Kanchi Maha Periyavar, seeking a solution to his problems. Periyavar asked him if he was worshiping his family deity. The person replied that he didn't know who his family deity was, as his ancestors had migrated from Burma three generations ago.
Periyavar advised him to find out who his family deity was and worship them. The person searched and eventually found out that his family deity was Pechai Amman. He then worshiped her and found relief from his problems.
What to do if you don't know your family deity:
If you don't know your family deity, you can worship a kalasha (a pot filled with water) or a lamp as a symbol of your family deity. You can also worship a red cloth spread on the floor with a lamp on it.
Kanchi Periyavar's advice:
"If you search for your family deity, they will reveal themselves to you. Until then, you can worship a kalasha or a lamp as a symbol of your family deity. Receive the blessings of your family deity."
How to worship your family deity:
It's ideal to visit your family deity's temple frequently. If that's not possible, visit at least once a year, perform abhishekam, offer new clothes, and worship with pongal.
Some people may have wealth and material possessions, but lack peace. This could be due to the lack of worshiping their family deity. If they start worshiping their family deity, their problems will be resolved.
