Lord Mrityunjaya Puja - Mrityunjaya Maha Mantra Yajna
Lord Mrityunjaya Puja, Mrityunjay Homam, Maha Mrityunjaya Yajna
If you are reading this, you would have most likely heard of an infamous Rik from the Rig-Veda, Seventh Mandala, Fourth Chapter, Forty-ninth Suktha, and twelfth Sloka, the famous Shiva Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:
Om Tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam
Urvarukam iva bandhanan-mrityor mukshiya mamrtat ||
The meaning of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra lyrics which is recited when performing Maha Mrityunjaya Homa, Maha Mrityunjaya Puja and Maha Mrityunjaya Yagna is as follows:
“We adore (yajamahe) the great lord, who has a fragrance of virtuous deeds (sugandhim) and who provides nourishment for all the worlds (pusti-vardhanam). May his grace free us from death (mrityor muksiya), like the cucumber (urvaruka, according to Sayana karkati-phala, cucmis utilissimus - scientific name) which falls off from its own stalk (bandhanat, that is the bond of death, the melon though detached is not dead), but not from immortality (ma-amritat)”.
This is the Tryambaka (Triambaka) Mantra or Mrityunjaya Mantra, a famous Mantra to Tryambaka, a name of the three-eyed Siva, esoterically the mother of the “three”, i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra.
According to Rigvidhana (2,314 and 315), the recitation of this hymn, along with prescribed rituals and fasting for three days, will prolong life for a hundred years, this is described in below:
Trirathram niyathoposhya shrepayetpayasam charum |
Samuddishya mahadevam triambakam triambaketyurcaya
Yekatparvashatam kritva jivedwashashatam sukhi || Tenahritishatam purnam juhuyacchamsithavrataha ||
Out of all the Smartha Yajnas, Maha Mrityunjaya Yaga has special merit. The performance of Maha Mrityunjaya Yaga is said to counter all the pains and troubles caused by planets, cure the greatest o f the great diseases, prolong life and lead to health happiness and all round prosperity.
In Maha Mrityunjaya Yaga, the Havan (offerings into the fire) is performed by chanting the Mantras from the Sixteenth chapter of Shukla Yajur Veda. In the ‘Maha Yajna’ of the Mritunjaya from AstroMerits, there will be 1 Lakh 24 thousand (124,000) Aahuthis and 12400 offerings into the fire and will be done over a period of eleven days. The exact same procedure as prescribed in the Vedas for the conduct of Maha Mrityunjaya Yaga is strictly adhered to.
Maha Mrityunjaya Puja and Mahamirtyunja Homa are the other options for those who want to better their health and to those who are presently not in good health. Rigorous worship of Lord Mrityunjaya (‘Mritunjaya’ means he who has defeated death) is stated to confer a long, healthy and happy life to the worshipper. Have a Mrityunjaya Puja, Maha Mriyunjaya Homam or a Maha Mrityunjaya Yajna performed at DOSHANIVARTHI to live a long and healthy life
