Special Features

The most famous temple of Lord Muruga in Coimbatore District is Chennimalai. This world famous temple of Lord Muruga is where Lord Arunagirinathar was blessed with "Padikasu", wealth of coins. This is where an unusual phenomenon, rather a miracle took place in the year 1984 on 12th February. A bullock cart with two bulls climbed the 1320 steps on their own on this eventful day. Saravana Munivar wrote the most popular Chennimalai Sthalapuranam before 700 years. Milk and curds are used as special offerings to Lord Muruga in Chennimalai and it is the general belief that curds do not become sour here.

Temple

The temple of Chennimalai is situated on the banks of Noyal also called Kānchima Nadhi. The Sanctum Sanctorum faces the east. Just in front of the temple we find the Puliyadi Vināyagar. Inside the temple to the right of Moolavar we find the shrines of Mārkandeswarar and to the left Umayavalli. On the left side we find the shrines of Kasi Viswanāthar and Visālākshi.

If we take the steps found just behind the Moolavar Sannidhi, we reach the Valli Teyvannai Temple. The two consorts enshrined in a separate temple are a very unique phenomenon. On the top of the hill we find the Pinnākau Siddhar cave with the front yard filled with Vel of different sizes and shapes. This Siddhar is one of the popular 18 Siddhar known to the world for their Siddha yoga. Near this cave we find the Saravana Māmunivar's Tomb. There is also another very ancient cave near this temple.

Speciality of this temple

The main deity Murugan is equated to the Sevvai graham or planet Mars and all the rest of the eight planets encircle the Lord in perfect harmony. If one circumambulates the main deity he is believed to get the benefit of circumambulating the navagrahās and worshipping them.

Valli Teyvannai Temple

As we go further up behind the temple we see the Valli Teyvannai temple. They are in penance to attain Lord Muruga. They are known by the names Amirthavalli and Sundaravalli. A separate temple for Valli and Teyvannai is the most unique feature of this temple.

Shasti Vratam

The observance of Shasti fast is also a special feature in this temple. Many devotees take this vow and spend 6 days fasting and praying at the temple premises. The monthly Shasti day after the new moon is also observed with great reverence. Particularly those devotees without progeny sincerely observe this Shasti fast and there are many instances of families coming traditionally on getting their vow fulfilled.

Kanda Shasti Kavacham offering

Another most important feature here is that the popular daily prayer of Murugan Devotees, Kanda Shasti Kavacham was first offered to the world in this temple by Balan Dêvarāya Swamigal. From that day onwards till today many devotees keep chanting this prayer every day.

Sirasuppu Utharavu Kêttal

Asking for the Lord's permission before taking up any task like building a new house or getting their children married or any other issue is customary in this temple. Devotees offer an Archnai and perform Sirasappu offering. If the reply is positive they whole-heartedly perform that action or event. Traditionally if the answer is negative the Devotees do not venture further.
Holy water brought by the Temple Bulls

The holy water for Abishekam is being brought everyday by the temple bulls, which are being maintained by the Devasthanam. This procedure is also a very unique one not found in other temples.

Mamanga Theertham

Once in twelve years, during drought conditions a spring gushes out water. This spring is on the southern side of the hill temple. This is a miraculous Divine happening. The Vināyagar near the spring called Mamānga Theertha Vināyagar. The people worship this Vināyagar and the holy springs with great Devotion.

Sthala Vriksham is tamarind tree and is found in front of the temple where there is a shrine for Puliamarathadi Vināyagar.

deity

The moolavar here is popularly known as Siragiri Dandayudhapani. This deity as per Sthala Puranam gave Dharsan to Saravana Munivar as single faced Murugan after appearing as the six faced Arumugam in the first instance. The utsava murti is Muttukumara Subramaniyar with his two consorts Valli and Teyvannai.
Mythology

The Chennimalai Sthalapuranam has 207 verses including the invocation songs and is divided into six cantos. They are Chepêdu Kanda Mānmiyam, Siragiri Mānmiyam, Pushpagiri Mānmiyam, Kātchi Mānmiyam, Idumbanuku Vazhi Kātiya Mānmiyam, ālayam Kanda Mānmiyam. The author of this great work is the poet Saint Saravana Munivar. This book also mentions that the temple was initially built by Saravana Munivar himself and the festivities were also initiated by him.

Saravana Munivar went to Palani, Tiruvavinankudi and circumambulated the Palani hills offering prayer and requested the Lord to give him Chennimalai Sthalapuranam. As per Lord Muruga's Divine instruction, Saravana Munivar went to Kanchipuram and brought a copy of the copper plate inscription of Sthalapuranam. He was wonder struck to note the depiction in the Sthalapuranam come alive when he reached Chennimalai. He built the temple of Lord Muruga and also a separate shrine for Valli and Teyvannai. Later he also built a temple for Kailasanāthar near Subramanya Theertham in the city of Chennimalai. He built the shrine of Lord Muruga and Valli Teyvannai in the Chitra Mandapam of this temple. He also made the temple car similar to the one at Palani. The Lord of Chennimalai is enshrined both on the hilltop and in the city. The famous poet Teyvasigamani Gounder brought out the original palm leaf inscription of this Puranam in print.

History

Saravana Munivar constructed the temple on the hill and the city beneath, Kailāya Nāthar temple and initiated the car festival.
In the first half of the 13th Century acres of land where offered to the Lord of Chennimalai. The Minister by name Muthuvasavaiyan of Mysore Devaraja Udayar Dynasty renovated the exterior of this temple in the year 1654.

Devaraja Udayar's other Minister Madavāgam Devaraja Iyer sung the Kanda Shasti Kavasam for the king. We find the sculptures of Devaraja Udayar, his wife and Muthuvasavaiyan on the pillar of Valliamman temple.

Sengathurai Poosari

Sengathurai Poosari lived in the 18th century. He was born in Sengathurai of Pallādam Thaluk. At the foot of the Chennimalai hill we find his tomb and Madam. He took renunciation at a very early age, offered himself to the Lord of Chennimalai, and renovated the temple by and large.
He built the Mahā Mandapam of the temple on the hill, laid the floor with stones on the hill temple, and constructed the Kailasanāthar temple outer mandapam, inner mandapam, gopuram & tirumathil. On the day of consecration of Maha Mandapam of the hill temple, the sculptor showed him, his sculpture that he had created as a mark of acknowledgement. Sengathurai Poosari immediately said that this stone figure is going to replace him and on the very day he attained the Golden Feet of the Lord.

Arulmigu Vadapalani Andavar Thirukoil – History

Preamble:
By that time the name and fame of this small shrine had reached its heights there by attracting large crowds, Humanists, Philanthropists and devotees turning their eyes towards this shrine. The spiritual abode took its metamorphosis from being a small shrine into proper temple, with all its magnificence.
The Sadhus who were the cause of ARULMIGU VADAPALANI ANDAVAR THIRUKKOIL is situated in the midst of Chennai city. The famous shrine was built in the tail end of 17th century. Just like conjurers materializing fantastic objects with dexterity of their hands this much hallowed MURUGA temple emerged from a thatched shed. One ANNASAMY Naicker, unostentatious muruga devotee with his limited means built a thatched hut and kept a MURUGA photo (Palani Andavar) for his personal worship primarily as per his dream and love for LORD MURUGA.
During his meditation and worship he was experiencing some divine power inspiring him to utter some mysterious things there by whatever his utterances has become true. His trance went by Arulvakku which relieved the people fulfilling their anguishes like curing diseases, getting jobs and solemnizing marriages. In spite of his illness, at the instance of a sadhu and Lotd muruga he visited tiruthani and prayed to lord MURUGA and went to the extent of offering his tongue on the Balipeeta.
He also visited south Palani by foot and he had miraculous experiences there, returned to his place and was worshipping lord Muruga. When he felt his end was nearing he requested his close friend Rathinasamy Thambiran to continued the service and the public inspired by his service started giving offerings and donations which was used for building a small shrine. After him by 1931, came one Pakiyalinga Thambiran who also followed predecessors by giving Arulvakku.
emerging of this great MURUGA kshethram are being devoted even now, 3 sidharpeedams have been erected at Nerkundram Road where poojas are done on Every Pournami day. In the Year 1972, the south Rajakopuram erected at a height of 72 feet, and Kumbabishekam took place for first time, after that in the year 1984, second Kumbabishakam took place and a thangaratham (Golden Car) was drawn for fullfilly devotees wishes.

ANANDHASAYANARAMAR and Sri VENUGOPALASWAMY at Vengadampettai

ANANDHASAYANARAMAR and Sri VENUGOPALASWAMY at Vengadampettai

Have dharshan of wonderful ANANDHASAYANARAMAR and Sri VENUGOPALASWAMY at Vengadampettai, Cuddalore. Preserve the Heritage Temple of Tamil Nadu

Creation, Preservation and Destruction of the whole Universe is as per Almighty's Will. As such I had Sri Rama's grace to visit the wonderful temple belongs to 15th century at Venkatampettai in Cuddalore district. It is understood that under the rule of Venkatapathy Nayakkar between 1464 and 1478 this hamlet was existing. French rulers during 1478 have gifted this village to Anandarangam Pillai of Pudhucherry. It is understood that this temple was either renovated or constructed by the sister of the king who ruled the Gingee.
This Temple has many special features. It is in the sprawling area of the land scape with 236 X 129 feet granite stone temple with high structure of mandap, 7 stage Rajagopuram, 50 feet high granite stone Unjal mandapam, Stand for Temple Car and Theertham spread over to one Acre land. The distance between the Theertham and Temple itself is about one KM which speaks the greatness of this temple. It has many more wonders.

It shall the God's will that the revered Hindu Sankarar Sri Kamatchi Ambal Temple sthapakar and Trustee Sri VidyaBhushanam Siva Sri V.A.S. Bhaskara Swamigal from Ham Nagar, Germany visited this place when the swamigal took tour to various temple in Tamil Nadu. It is Swamigal greatness and gracious of Lord Venugopalan and Anandhasayana Ramar that Swamigal took up the work without waiting for any body's help. It is astonishing to hear and see the photos that the entire structures was removed with out any damage and the same structures have been restored and renovated in the same place without any modification of using the all granite stone pillars of about 20 feet height.\\

It was a himalayan task that one swamigal has spent all the money to renovate the temple with crores of rupees and restored the divinity of the deities and greatness of the structures. To start with Kumbabishegam was performed at the first instance on 02.02.2009. After that, daily pooja has been started in a small way. It is reliably understood that rarely devotees are started coming to this Temple.
The speciality of the temple is the Charming Sri Venugola Swamy with Bhama and Rukmini. As per the myth and scripts God with consorts will give boon to every one who have dharshan of the God. God always in kindness in the presense of consorts. Sri Venugopalaswamy is in standing posture always ready to give boon to the devotees taking dharshan of him and the consorts extends blessing.

Other rare and dazling feature of the temple is dharshan of Sri Anandhasayana Ramar. One may ask why it is rare. Ramar always in the standing posture in all temples. Sayana Kolam (sleeping posture) is very rare. The deity is about 18 feet, sleeping on Adhi Sesha and Goddess Seetha in sitting posture. The face of Lord Rama is as beautiful as Lord Ranganatha. One may wonder why it is Sri Ramar and Not Lord Ranganatha. It is clear from the explanation given by the Battacharriyar that Anandhasayana Ramar has two hands and have no counch

Anandhasayana Ramar temple at this place is more opt for other reason also. That, this place was a dense forest earlier and named as Thennarkadu (South Forest) and many name of the habitats in these are come chainly depicting Ramayana. Just for example Thindivanam, Villupuram, Seethakuppam, Ammbu booti palayam like that. The distance all these place are about 80 kms. More evidance is available like these to show Lord Ramas was wandering in this area. Sayana Ramar is the will of the God and dazzling posture to protect and liberate the devotees.

Another deity in the sannathi is Paramapatha Vasan (Lord Vishnu) who is to liberate the jeevathma at the end of the life. "Anantham, Avyayam, Kavihum, Samudhre antham Viswa Sampuvam" (Narayana Suktham). Meaning Lord Narayana is Omni present, Omni potant , all pervading gives all mangalam at the end of the life. The same Vishnu is residing in sitting posture in this shrine. After having dharshan of the three it fulfilss the famous proverb in the Vashnavism "Ninran, Irundhan & kidanthan"

In all temples seperate sannathi is there for Thayar. Sengamalavalli is the name of the Goddess Lakshmi in this shrine. How this beautiful and merciful goddess has hide in this century is the wonder.

Other Sannathis' in this shrine is Sree Andal, Sri Garudashwar and other Azhwars.

Thiru Kollikaadu - Pongu Saniswarar

Agneeswararkoil-Thirukollikadu

The serenity has an aura of spirituality at Thirukollikadu a sleepy hamlet on the Mannargudi -Thiruthurai poondi road in the agrarian heartland of Tamilnadu.
Thitukollikadu is a temple dedicated to Agneeswarar and Saturn.
The presiding deity - Kollikadar- Agneeswarar
Ambal - Panchiniyum mellidayal
Sthala vriksha - Vanni
Holy waters - Sani theetham
Thirukollikadu is also called Agneeswaram because Agni Bhagwan worshipped the presiding deity and got rid of his curse. Saturn a planet in the navagrahas is intertwined with the lore of the temple.
Sun God
The heat radiated by Sun God -Surya was unbearable that his consort Usha Devi made Chaya Devi marry Surya to mitigate his burning brilliance. Even she was unable to control Surya. Thus with his consorts Surya worshipped Agneeswarar as advised by Agni.Bhagwan.
Agneeswarar happy with their prayers asked them to stand in the Sani Theertham (near the temple) and reduced the heat of Surya. He also blessed them with progeny.
Usha Devi was blessed with a son -Yama and Chaya Devi with Saturn. -Sani
Agneeswarar ordained Saturn to be the most important planet of the Navagrahas and declared that Saturn will punish a man according to his misdeeds so that he will realize his folly.
Thus Saturn took the baton in his hands and chastised celestials and mortals which created a stir in the universe.

Instead of worshipping Saturn they started fearing his wrath. Saturn disturbed by the turn of events requested Agneeswarar that he should be like any other Gods and bless mankind, but now people fear his malefic effect... But the Lord refused to budge and comply with his request. He ordered Saturn to follow his orders and punish the wicked. Saturn however was not satisfied with the Lord's answer and approached Sage Vasishta for advice.

Swetharanyeswarar Temple :: Thiruvenkadu – Budhan Sthalam

Swetharanyeswarar Temple
Thiruvenkadu – Budhan Sthalam
Swetharanyeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple located in the town of Thiruvengadu near Sirkazhi. The main deity is Shiva - Swetharanyeswarar ("lord of white forest") and the goddess is Brahma Vidya ambal. There is a separate Sannidhi for Bhudhan (mercury). The temple is quite large and all four important Saivite saints have sung in praise of this lord.

This temple is especially known for its unique incarnate of Lord Shiva called "Agora Murthi". He is one of the main god who is being prayed in this village.

Thiruvengadu village is also famous for its unique structure of pools in temples. This temple has 3 pools, 3 Gods. It is a belief that who takes bath in all these pools, the one will be free from their problems like diseases, delay in marriage, etc.,.
Swetharanyeswarar is the main God in this temple. It is said that Agora Murthi was one of the furious incarnation of Lord Shiva. There was an Evil named "Maruthuvasuran" in Thiruvengadu. He had a deep meditation on Lord Bhrama for power. Being satisfied with his meditation, Lord Bhrama offered him many powers. But he used those powers in a wrong ways. He started to torture the saints and innocent people. Having nothing to do, all the saints and people requested Lord Shiva to put an end to this evil. As they asked, Lord Shiva took his incarnation 'Agora murthi' and killed the 'Maruthuvasuran under a tree (which is now in Thiruvengadu temple, back to the entrance of Agora murthi). All the people thanked Lord Shiva for saving them

This Shiva temple is one of the 6 most sacred places on the banks of river manikanigai and Cauvery which is considered as equivalent to the temple at Varanasi. The other 5 shivasthalams are Thiruvaiyaru, Chaayaavanam, Mayiladuturai, Tiruvidaimarudur and Tiruvanchiyam.

Indiran, Airavatam, Budhan, Sun God Sooriyan and Moon God Chandiran are said to have worshipped God Shiva here. From the stone inscriptions found inside this temple, it is seen that the earlier chola kings Aditya Chola and Rajaraja Chola have made a lot of contributions to this temple.

There are several shrines of significance in this well visited temple, including those to Durga and Kali. The image of Natarajar here is of great beauty. Worship to Aghoramurthy - (Veerabhadrar) is said to be of significance on Sunday nights in this temple. As found in Chidambaram, there is also a shrine for Lord Vishnu near the shrine for Natarajar. This is adi (first) chidambaram because before dancing shiva in chidambaram he done the first dance here.[1]

Marutwasura, an asura, was troubling the Rishis and the people of Thiruvenkadu.  The people prayed to Lord Shiva.  Lord Shiva sent Nandi (Bull) – his vahana, to fight the demon. Marutwasura was defeated by Nandi and thrown into the sea. Marutwasura through his penance obtained sula – from Lord Shiva.  The demon then returned with greater intensity to attack the innocent people.  Once again, at the request of the devotees, Shiva sent Nandi.  However, on this occasion, Nandi could not fight the demon as the demon had the Sula of Shiva.  The demon caused wounds on Nandi’s back with the Sula.  The idol of Nandi which bears scars on its body is seen here.

An angry Shiva opened his Third Eye and killed the demon.  The idol of Aghoramurthy, a manifestation of Shiva’s anger, is installed in Thiruvenkadu. Worshiping Aghoramurthy, especially on Sunday nights is considered important and special.

There is also another story of Swetaketu associated with Thiruvenkadu.  Swetaketu’s story is similar to that of Markendaiyan.  Swetaketu was destined to die at the end of his eight year but the Lord prevented Yama from taking His devotee’s life.

Lord Shiva is known to have performed his seven forms of dance or Tandavam viz Ananda tandavam, Sandhya tandavam, Samhara tandavam, Tripuranta tandavam, Urdhva tandavam, Bhujanga tandavam and Lalita tandavam here.  The three holy tanks here, known as Agni Theertham, Surya Theertham and Chandra Theertham are believed to have been created out of the three drops which fell from Lord Shiva’s eyes when he was dancing.  Another rare feature is that the deity is present here with five faces viz Easanam, Tatpurusham, Aghoram, Vamadevam and Sadyojatam.  They represent direction and an aspect of Lord Shiva.  Easanam is facing the sky and represents purity, Vamdevam faces north and represents sustenance, Tatpurisha faces east and represents spirituality that has destroyed the ego, Aghoram faces south and represents the destructive and regenerative aspect of Shiva,  Sadyojatam faces west and represents creation.

Thirucherai – Kadan Nivartheeswarar

Moolavar               Saraparameswarar
Gnanavalli sametha Sara Parameswarar koil at Thirucherai is known as the temple for debt relief. Lord Shiva here is known by different names like Udayar, Senneriyappar and Sara Parameswarar.

The temple is praised in the Thevram hymns of Gnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar. This is the 95th temple on the southern bank of river Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Mahashivarathri in Masi (February-March), Iypasi Annabishekam (October-November) and Margazhi Tiruvadhirai (December-January).

Lord Shiva graces in the temple as Swaymbumurthi. He is worshipped as Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar meaning that He relieves the devotees from debts. This is the only temple where three Durgas are present as Shiva Durga, Vaishnavi Durga and Vishnu Durga. Saint Tirunavukkarasar has praised the Bhairava in the temple with a special hymn. Bhairava graces here with a tattoo on the left upper arm with a trident and bell, a form exclusively seen only in this temple. The rays of Sun falls directly on the presiding deity and the feet of the Mother on 13, 14 and 15th of Masi (February-March). The holy tree Mavilangai will have only leaves for first four months of the year, only white flowers during the second four months and nothing during the remaining four months.

Sri Saraparameswarar Temple, Tirucherai Post – 612 605, Kumbakonam Taluk, Thanjavur district

Mother Gnanavalli shrine is on the outer corridor (prakara) left to the presiding deity Saraparameswarar. Lord Shiva teaches righteous path to all beings and Mother Gnanavalli assists Him in this graceful service, according to our Puranas. In the inner corridor, there are shrines for Vinayaka, Nataraja, Idaparooda (Lord Shiva on the bull vehicle), Dakshinamurthy, Kalabhairava, Durga, Sun and Sani Bhagwan (Saturn).

On the western side of the Prakara, there are shrines for Vinayaka, Markandeya and a Linga installed by him gracing His devotees from their debt burden web called Rina Vimochana Lingeswara. Then follows the shrines of Sri Balasubramania. The temple was built by the famous Chola King Kulothunga Chozhan.

Devotees offer abishek and Vastras to the Lord on realizing their prayers. The affluent ones do poor feeding (Annadhanam) and contribute for the maintenance and renovation of the temple.

Tiruchearai Lord Saraparameswara is also praised in the name of Chenneri Appar meaning that the Lord shows all the people the righteous way of living. There is also a Vishnu Temple nearby known as Pancha Kshetra.
This is the only temple where three Durgas, Shiva Durga, Vaishnavi Durga and Vishnu Durga grace the devotees from one shrine. Lamp worship is followed in this shrine during the Rahukalam time – 90 minutes in each day will be Rahukalam. The timing differs each day.
After worshipping the Navagrahas (9 planets) and Sri Nataraja, Bhairava graces from His shrine. Bhairava appears here with a tattoo on his left upper arm with a trident and bell, a depiction only in this temple. Saint Tirunavukkarasar has sung the grace of Bhairava of this temple in his Thevaram hymn. The song describes Bhairava as Lord Shiva Himself.
Devotees offer garlands made of Vada (a pudding fried in oil) to Bhairava on Ashtami day (8th day from new moon or full moon day), perform archana with 1000 names (Sahasranama) for relief from the adverse aspects of the planets and for success in litigations.
Sun worship: Sun worshipped Lord Shiva in many places offering his apologies to Lord for participating in the Yagna of Daksha against His wish. Tirucherai is one among them. Symbolising this, the rays of Sun falls on the Lord and the feet of Mother Gnambikai on 13, 14 and 15th day of Masi Month (February-March). Sun worship is very ardently performed these days. Special pujas are performed in the temple during the whole Masi month in the morning hours.
The name of the place had changed from Arai or Chetrur as Cherai or Tirucherai. The place is noted for its fertility in the Thevaram hymns.

Sage Markandeya installed a Linga for his own soul satisfaction near the Vinayaka in this temple and had been worshipping the Lord, praised as Rina (debts) Vimochana (released and discharged) Lingeswarar (God).
Everyone aspires for a comfortable life. Despite health, education and wisdom, if poverty creeps in, life becomes miserable and involves one in borrowings and debts. People pray to Lord Rina Vimochana Lingeswara here to spare them from such events in life. They offer prayers on 11 Mondays performing archanas and participate in the abishek ceremony finally on the 11th Monday to realize their prayers. Devotees firmly believe that this prayer would offer solution for all their problems and endow them with a life free of debt and blessed with children, education and material progress.
The Lord is Swayambumurthy. The holy tree Mavilangai has only leaves during the first four months of the year, only white flowers during the next four months and with none of these during the remaining four months of the year.  The rays of Sun falls on the presiding deity Lord Sara Parmeswara and on the feet of the Mother on 13, 14 and 15th of Masi month.

Miracle Based: Lord Shiva graces in the temple as Swaymbumurthi. he rays of Sun falls directly on the presiding deity and the feet of the Mother on 13, 14 and 15th of Masi (February-March). The holy tree Mavilangai will have only leaves for first four months of the year, only white flowers during the second four months and nothing during the remaining four months.

Thirumanancheri Temple for Marriage

thirumanancheri towerParvati once expresses her desire to have the experience of an earthly wedding to Shiva. This story is believed to be in fulfillment of this wish expressed by her. A dispute in Mount Kailash occured over a game of chess. In accordance with the verdict of Shiva, Parvati recedes to an earthly life and amidst her wandering reaches a place called Komal, where Lord Vishnu assumes a form of a cowherd to take care of his sister. He releases her from the clutch of the curse in a place called 'Thiruvaaduthurai' and Parvati sheds her assumed cow's form and takes Her normal form in 'Kuthaalam' in the sacrificial fire of Sage Bharata Muni. Shiva and Parvati then unite in marriage in Thirumanancheri. Shiva is also called as 'Sonavaararivaar' for keeping up His word.
