Thirumanancheri Temple for Marriage

thirumanancheri towerParvati once expresses her desire to have the experience of an earthly wedding to Shiva. This story is believed to be in fulfillment of this wish expressed by her. A dispute in Mount Kailash occured over a game of chess. In accordance with the verdict of Shiva, Parvati recedes to an earthly life and amidst her wandering reaches a place called Komal, where Lord Vishnu assumes a form of a cowherd to take care of his sister. He releases her from the clutch of the curse in a place called 'Thiruvaaduthurai' and Parvati sheds her assumed cow's form and takes Her normal form in 'Kuthaalam' in the sacrificial fire of Sage Bharata Muni. Shiva and Parvati then unite in marriage in Thirumanancheri. Shiva is also called as 'Sonavaararivaar' for keeping up His word.

God Vishnu, upset over the events, wanted to reconcile the couple. He went to Shiva to justify his case. Shiva told Vishnu about Parvati's wish to experience a wedding on earth and assured Vishnu that all events would lead to that end. He also told Vishnu to take the cow to bathe in the Cauvery so she could regain her original form. Vishnu did so and soon Parvati was herself again.

Parvathi was then instructed to go and live as the daughter of Bharata Muni, a saint living nearby. The story goes that Bharata Muni approached Shiva for his hand in marriage to Parvati, thereby granting her wish that she be married on earth.

Temples for Childless Couples

Temples for Childless Couples
In continuation to my two earlier posts on temples for childless couples for childbirth, I am providing below two temples for childless couples that are in city or town so that travel and accommodation are not a problem.

Reason for Childlessness
The Naga dosham or the Sarpa dosham is the main reason for married couples to remain childless. Therefore the childless couples trying to conceive are searching for pariharam for Naga dosham. Irrespective of whether the childless couple is willing to accept for such concepts of doshams, the effect is the same, namely, the problems of being childless. People who believe-in God and astrology will visit temples for childless couples. Those childless couples not believing astrology will be depending on medical treatments along. The point to be noted here is that the medical treatment for childless couples is only the necessary condition and visiting temples and doing the pariharam for childless couples is the sufficient condition for childbirth. Most of the temples an astrologer suggesting will be located well far away from city and therefore the childless couples trying to conceive should make transport arrangements.

Pariharam for Childless Couples in Chennai
Next is the most important temple where the childless couples trying to conceive must visit. The name of the temple is the Sri Panchamuga Lakshmi Narasimhar Sannadhi, located in North Madras, which is also the Divyadesam 109. The presiding deity is Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar with five faces which are respectively given by
  1. Garudar
  2. Varaahar
  3. Narasimhar
  4. Hayagreevar
  5. Anjaneyar or Hanumaan.

The pariharam for childless couples provided in Divyadesam 109 is generally not available in any other temples. In this opinion, the Divyadesam 109 happens to be a very special temple for childless couples for childbirth who have faith in praying Lord Narasimhar. The success of the pariharam offered in this temple can be seen in the facebook page of Divyadesam 109. Childless couples who are interested to do pooja to Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar should visit the temple on any Saturday at 05:00 PM.

Sri Kalyana Prasanna Venkatramanar Temple, Mohanur

Sri Kalyana Prasanna Venkatramanar Temple, Mohanur

Mohanur is located in Namakkal district of Tamilnadu. It is a small village situated on the bank of river Cauvery. This town panchayat is located 19 km from Namakkal and 13 km from Karur. Satyanarayana Pooja will be conducted every Tiruvonam star day in this temple. Mohanur is having a special feature where river cauvery is flowing from north to south direction

Kalyana Prasanna Venkatramanar temple is one of the famous temples located in Mohanur. Padmavathi thayar is the consort for Lord Kalyana Prasanna Venkatramanar. This temple is believed to be 500 years old. There is a history behind the origin of this temple. A devotee of Lord Venkatachalapathy used to visit Tirumala during Brahmorchavam every year. On that particular year he was not able to go there because he had paralytic attack. So he was not able to walk to have a darshan of the lord. He got fed up and went to cauvery river to end his life. By that time a snake appeared before him and did not let him to commit suicide. Lord told in his dream that he was in the ant hill. The devotee found his idol in that ant hill and consecrated it near the cauvery riverbank.
On entering the temple we can see navaneetha krishna with butter in his hand. Vilvam is the sthala viruksham (sacred tree) here. Inside the temple  Chakkarathazhvar sannidhi is there and Yoga Narasimhar shrine is anterior to that. Behind the main deity sanctum, Lord Dhanvanthiri shrine is there. There is also Lakshmi Hayagreevar shrine and opposite to that is Saraswathi sannidhi is there.

Satyanarayana Pooja In Mohanur

During Navarathiri festival times, on a sunday a festival called ” A day in Tirupathi ” is celebrated here. On that festival time they follow the same procedures as in Tirumala and deity will be having same alankar as of Venkatachalapthy. Another remarkable pooja performing here is the Sathyanarayana pooja on every Tiruvonam star, birth star of Maha Vishnu. On the particular day tirumanjanam is offered to the Lord on morning and at evening Sathyanarayana Pooja is performed. The greatness of the pooja is that devotees place coocnuts without stripping the outer cover in that pooja and pray to God to fulfill their requirements. In that pooja they do aavaahanam of Sathyanarayana swamy in that coconut and give it back to the devotees. They have to keep the coconut in the pooja room and should pray to the lord for their needs. It is believed that within three to five months their wishes are fulfilled. After that coconut should be placed back again in the temple on a Tiruvonam star day with the outer cover stripped. It is said that many people got their wishes fulfilled with this worship. It is popularly called ” mattai thaengai Vazhipaadu ” in Tamil. Usually this pooja is performed at evening but for the last four or five months this is performed in the morning als -

Mohanur can be reachable either from Namakkal or Karur. Lot of town buses and long route buses are available to Mohanur from Namakkal. Mohanur is having newly constructed railway station. However there is no train service avilable as of now. So nearby railway station is Karur. From Karur one can catch bus or taxi to reach Mohanur -

5 day festival in the month of Chithirai (April-May) and 10 day Adi Poornima-July-August are the festivals celebrated in the temple, drawing huge crowd of devotees.

The temple is noted for its sculpture of rare and minute workmanship
The sculptures in the corridor-prakara are noted for their exquisite beauty and minute workmanship in nails, muscles and reflecting even the inner veins

Those who have lost their possessions, and those desirous of restoring broken relationships offer lime fruit garlands to Karthaveeriarjuna lighting ghee lamps. Sri Andal graces on every Thursday in the Mandap here, when devotees perform turmeric abishek for early wedlocks.  People believe that they get even foreign suitors if so prayed for.  Devotees also throng the temple for child boon, academic achievements, business development etc.

Those having prayer commitments to Madurai Azhagar can offer the same in this temple.

Those weak in education, suffering from lack of memory pray to Lord Hayagriva and Mother Saraswathi gracing from their shrines in the Prakara.  On Tiruvonam star day, they perform special pujas to Lord Hayagriva with honey, coconut and a nivedhana made of jaggery powder and ghee and cardamom garlands.

There is a separate shrine for Lord Dhanvanthari.  On new moon days, abishek is performed with oil and herbal paste known as Lehiyam.

Chakarathalwar graces with deities attributed to Gayatri Mantra.  Lord Narasimha graces with Ashtalakshmis.

There are also shrines for Vishwaksenar, Twin Vinayaka, 10 incarnation forms of Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi Narasimha, Venugopala, Anjaneya and Swarna Bhairava.

Sculptures of exquisite beauty:

The temple may well be called a treasure house of Indian sculptures of rare workmanship.  They speak volumes.  Mother Soundaravalli graces from a separate shrine.  Lord Vinayaka and Vishnu Durga and deities of prosperity – Sanganidhi and Padmanidhi graces at Her shrine.  Mother’s shrine may well be called a museum of sculptures.  The sculptures include Lord Vishnu measuring the three worlds, Lord Narasimha, Vaikundanathar, Venugopala, Lord Vishnu on Gaurda, Anjaneya carrying Lord Rama on his shoulders, Chakarathalwar, Oordhvathandavar (cosmic dance of Lord Shiva), Oordhvakali, Akora Veerabadra, Rathi and Karthaveeryarjuna.

Tiruvona deepa:

Lord Soundararaja Perumal graces from sanctum sanctorum with His consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi in a standing form.  As it is believed that Lord Kallazhagar of Madurai has connections with this place also, a festival of the Lord visiting the Kudaganaru River is celebrated as in Madurai in Vaigai River.  The festival represents the grace of the Lord to Sage Mandukya.  On each Tiruvonam star day, a dheep is lit at the feet of the Lord.  The procession deity would be following the lamp taken before Him.  It is believed that those fortunate to have this darshan would be relieved of their sins.

Brahmmotsavam is celebrated in the moth of Adi (July-August).  The car festival of the Lord takes in place on the full moon day of the month.  Sri Akarshana Bhairva offers solution to devotees to manage economic problems.

The Sanskrit word Mandookam means frog.  A sage was once cursed and became a frog and is known as Sage Mandookya.  He performed severe penance on Lord Vishnu in this place for relief from the curse.  During the course of his penance, a demon was harassing him.  Responding to prayer call of the sage, Lord Vishnu-Madurai Kallazhagar destroyed the demon and protected the Rishi.  As entreated by the sage, Lord stayed here itself in the name of Soundararajar.

The temple, enjoying equal respect and importance as the Kallazhagar temple in Madurai, is believed to have been built 500 years ago by Atchuda Devarayar, a descendant of Krishna Deva Raya.

Sri srinivasa perumal temple -serangoon road singapore

Sri srinivasa perumal temple serangoon road  singapore

The history of Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple dates back to the late 1800s when influential community leaders like Mr Arunachala Pillay, Mr Cootaperumal Pillay, Mr Ramasamy Pillay, Mr Appasamy Pillay, Mr Chockalingam Pillay and Mr Ramasamy Jamidar, all of whom had close working links with the East India Company, wanted to build a Hindu temple for Vaishnavite worship.

These men got together and purchased a piece of land measuring 2 acres 2 woods and 24 poles from the East India Company in 1851 for 26 rupees and 8 annas (at that period of time Indian currency was still used in the Settlement of Singapore). The temple they built in 1885 was referred to as the Narasinga Perumal Kovil.

Following the construction of the original temple structure, 2 adjoining parcels of land were later obtained for the temple’s needs. In 1894, devotees Mr Moona Sithumbaram Pillay and Mr Vinasithamby Murugesu purchased a 25,792 square feet piece of land which they donated to the temple. The second piece of adjoining land measuring 3,422 square feet was obtained by the Mohammedan Hindu Endowments Board, MHEB (under whose administration the temple was from 1907) from the East India Company on 15th August 1912 on a 999 year lease at an annual fee of 1 Straits Settlement dollar.

The original temple structure remained unchanged until the early 1950s. In 1952, the MHEB decided to rebuild and reinstate the Temple. Redevelopment was only carried out in the early 1960s when well known Indian community leader and philanthropist Mr P. Govindasamy Pillay financed much of the works. Mr Pillay is credited with building the first two storey marriage hall within the temple. It was officially opened by Enche Yusoff Bin Ishak, the first president of Singapore on 19th June 1965.

The present building minus the Pillaiyar sanctum, Rajagopuram (grand tower entrance) and the covered walkway were completed in 1966. At this juncture, many elders advised that the main deity of the temple be changed from the imposing Sri Narasimha to the gracious Sri Srinivasa Perumal. The temple was thus renamed Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple.

Although financial constraints had prevented the addition of a Rajagopuram to the façade of the temple in the early days, in 1979, Rajagopuram was erected. All costs for the entire construction and renovation works in the 1970s redevelopment phase were generously borne by Mr P Govindasamy Pillay.

In 1978, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple was declared a National Monument by the Preservation of Monuments Board.

The temple underwent major facelifts in 1987, 1992 and 2005. During the different phases of redevelopment, improvements were made to the façade and facilities to meet imperative devotee needs. Visitors to the temple today can witness the painstaking efforts undertaken by the temple’s successive management committees to ensure that its conservation status was maintained. From well laid out sanctums, rich sculptural embellishments to an ornate mandapam (pillared pavillion) built for the worship of processional deities, these and many more new features make the temple an embodiment of Hinduism.

Some of the major festivals celebrated here are Thaipusam, Navarathiri, Vaikunda Ekathesi and Purattasi Sani.

The temple is praised in the Prabandham hymns of Tirumangai Azwar, Tirumazhisaipiran and Vaishnavite Acharya Sri Nikamanta Maha Desikan.

The temple witnesses a huge devotee crowd in thousands during the two Brahmmotsavams, the first of 10 days in Chithirai (April-May) and the second 10 days in Thai covering January-February. The crowd is equally big for the Pavithra Utsav lasting seven days. Besides these, Thai new moon day, Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January, Tamil and English new year days, Deepavali and Pongal are celebrated in the temple.

Abishek to Lord is performed with perfumed oil only. Hruthapadhani spring is considered more sacred than the holy Ganga and it is believed that it cleanses devotees even from the very thinking of a sin.

Lord Veera Raghava Perumal is all merciful a physician.  Any sick person praying here continuously on three new moon days is cured of diseases as stomach pain, defects in hands and legs and fever.  Devotees also pray for child boon and happy wedding and reliefs from any untold hardship and suffering.

Devotees offer Papli Tupatti – an upper cloth to Perumal. This is not available in shops. This is sold in the temple office only priced at Rs. 300. Devotees also offer discs embossed with some figures as eye, full figure, house etc. They offer special archanas and aradhanas and distribute nivedhanas to visitors. Devotees also offer 9 yard length silk sari to Mother. For removal of pimples in faces, they dissolve milk and jaggery in the temple tank and put salt and pepper in the mandap.

This is the most important Divya Desa in the Thondai Mandalam region.  The sacred spring in the temple is considered more sacred than holy Ganga and a dip cleanses the devotee of even thinking of a sin.  Six pujas, as per rules are performed in the temple at fixed times each day. The temple has a mention in Markandeya Purana.  Abishek to Lord is performed only with perfumed oil.  Lord is in a reclining form – on a five feet peeta, 15 feet long.  There are shrines for Lord Lakshmi Narasimha, Chakkarathazhwar.  This is an ancient temple built during the period of Pallavas.

Saint Tirumangai Azhwar has lavishly praised Mother Lakshmi born in the milk ocean and occupying the handsome chest of Lord Nitya Kalyana Perumal gracing the devotees from this shrine.  His Mangalasasanam hymn is the quintessence of not only the saint’s devotion to Lord and Mother but an exquisite poetic expression through the Tamil language.  Only gifted scholars can render the verse in English or any language.

Vaikunda Ekadasi is very devotionally celebrated in the temple in December-January.

Of the celebrated 108 Divya Desas of Lord Vishnu, this is the only temple, where the Wedding Festival is celebrated throughout the year – all the 365 days of the year. Women facing delays in their wedding are advised to pray to Mother in the temple

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m

Lord Perumal appears majestically in His standing form facing east.  The Vimana above the sanctum sanctorum is called Kalyana Vimanam.  Sage Markandeya had worshipped Perumal in this temple.

This is the place of prayer suggested to those affected with evil looks (dhrushti dosha), adverse aspects of serpent planets Rahu and Kethu and those facing delays in marriage.

Lord of the temple is praised in the Mangalasasanam hymns of Saints Tirumangai Azhwar and Manavala Mamunigal.  There is a dot on the cheek of the Lord which is considered as a protection from the jealous look of others.

Mother made a single woman fusing together 360 virgins, hence praised as Akhilavalli Nachiar.  The philosophy behind this is described as that Lord Vishnu alone is Purusha the male and all others are but females.  He is Nayaka.  Others are Nayakis.   Mother in Her separate shrine is worshipped as Komalavalli.  Lord Perumal in the temple appears with one foot on earth, the other on the heads of Adisesha and his wife and having Akhilavalli Thayar on His left lap and graces as Lord Varaha Murthy.

During Thretha Yuga, Bali the son of king Meganathan was ruling the kingdom in a righteous way.  Demons Mali, Malyavan and Sumali and others sought the help of Bali to fight against the devas.  Bali simply declined to help them.  The demons  fought alone were defeated by the Devas.  They came again to Bali for help which he obliged this time.  Bali won the war but was afflicted with Brahmmahati dosha.  He came to this place for relief and performed penance on Lord Perumal.  Pleased with his penance, Perumal appeared before Bali and granted darshan in Varaha Rupa.

Sage Kuni and his daughter performed penance on Lord Narayana to reach Sorga-Paradise.  Kuni alone reached Sorga but not the daughter.  Maharshi Narada told the young girl that she could not reach Sorga as she was not married.  He requested other sages to marry her.  One Kalava Maharshi married her and got 360 female children.  He performed penance on Lord Narayana begging Him to marry his daughters.  Narayana did not come.  A brahmmachari – bachelor came one day there saying that he was on a Divyadesa Yatra.  As he was very handsome as Nayarana, the sage requested him to marry his daughters.  He agreed and married one each day.  On the last day, He showed what He was.  He was but Narayana in the form of Varaha.  He fused all the daughters into one and had them on His left lap.  As Perumal had them together in one form on His Left Lap (left in Tamil is Idam) the place came to be known as Tiruvidavendhai which later changed as Tiruvidandhai.
