Sangameswarar alayam is a temple in Bhavani, in the Erode district, of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple was built at the confluence of Kaveri river, Bhavani river and ‘agaya gangai’, an invisible underground water source.
The temple was praised in old Tamil literatures Thirupugazh, Pillaithamizh by Thirugnanasambandar and Arunagiriyar, as Thirunana.
Sangameswarar alayam is a Tamil Nadu tourism spot and has a huge hall for social events, a beautiful river side garden, round boat ride, swim and bath area, and an elephant too. Here Kaveri river, Bhavani river and Amudha river join together. River Amudha flow as Antharvahini, just like Sarasvathy at Triveni Sangamam of Allahabad. The place is also known as Dakshina Triveni Sangamam. This place is also known as Padhuma Giri which is surrounded by Naga Giri, Veda giri, Sanga Giri and Mangala Giri.The temple is known as Kooduthurai by locals.

History and myths

Kubera, son of Vishrava was gifted an aircraft to visit Shiva temples across the country in recognition of his devotion to Lord Shiva. While he was flying near the river Cauvery Kubera was surprised to see a deer, tiger, cow, elephant, snake and rat drinking water near an Ilandhai tree on the river bank without enmity, to answer his wonder Kubera heard a voice from the sky saying it was a place where vedas visited, inhabited by gandharvas and advised him to worship the shivalingam under the iilanadhi tree.
The temples Ilandhai tree gives fruit on all season which was used for everyday puja even today. During the period of Chera Chola and Pandya’s there was a cave connection existed between Chidambaram and Sangameshwarar temple and puja’s are performed at same time in both temples.
The cow behind the Vishnu statue remains the harmony between Saivism and Vaishnavism. It was said from generations that every inch under the temple has one shivalingam.

Inside the temple

Rock status of this temple represents the beauty of stone carving and the culture of the people. When water or milk poured on the two identical stone statues in font of ambal sannidhi- Hindu goddess, one smiles at you, while the other sheds tears at you. The temple got a precious Ambal statue, a Hindu goddess donated by a district collector during British period for saving his life. CHEVVAAI DOSHAM

Planet Mars or Chevvai

• Mars is a planet of war, battle and fight, given to anger. An ill placed Mars disturbs family life and causes frequent quarrels, emotional upheavals, and abusive violent fights between marriage partners.
• Mars governs one`s ego, self-esteem, energy, will-power, confidence, temperament, courage, warring tendency, dominance, heroism, anger, joyousness and presence of dosha makes a person`s temper to be of volatile nature. Such natives will have trouble adjusting to spouse, friends, family members, co-workers.
• Mars dominated natives have tremendous energy and this usually affects one`s family life, unless it is well channelized.

Chevvai Dosham - What is it?

When Mars or Chevvai is placed in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, or 8th houses from the moonsign or from one`s lagna or ascendant, then chevvai dosham is formed.
Before marriage, it is very important to check for the doshas in both the groom`s and bride`s chart, as presence of dosha would lead to marital discord, separation, divorce and even death.
Traditionally, the one with dosha is married to another with the same quantum of dosha, as it cancels the evil effects.

Remedies to Follow

• Visit a temple on a Tuesday and offer 9 red apples to the beggars. The apples should be given away in full without being cut or sliced. On full apple should be given to nine beggars.
• One should visit Shiva temple for 8 weeks. On the 9TH week, on a pradosham day or any other day should perform archana and abhisekam with honey to Lord Shiva. One has to distribute food offerings to people outside the temple. Doing this would remove obstacles and delay in marriage and marriage would take place soon.
• Prayers to Andal of Srivilliputtur is said to reduce the ill-effects of chevvai dosha. Pilgrimage to Srivilliputtur during the aadi month and worshipping Andal on the day of Aadi pooram would appease chevvai and help reduce its ill effects.
• If chevvai is places in the 7th or 8th house in a natal chart, then one should offer red sari and conduct thirukalyanam to Sri Andal.
• Those who face adverse effects of chevvai can also pray to Sudarsana Alwar or Chakrathazhwar on Tuesdays.
• One should have a tulsi plant at home and worship it every day to ward off the planet`s evil effects.
• Propitiate Lord Muruga by worshipping him with red oleander flowers on Tuesdays. Atleast for 7 Tuesdays in a nearby Murugan temple would greatly help to bring good results. On the seventh Tuesday, donate red grams to the temple priest.
• Chant Hanuman Chalisa and Sunder kand regularly. Worship lord Hanuman by visiting his temple and lighting a ghee lamp for him.
• Chant the Gayathri mantra 108 times daily.
• Visit to Vaitheeswaran Koil, near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu would reduce the unfavorable effects of the planet. The presiding deity is Lord Muruga, known as Muthukumaraswamy. Prayers to the planet and the ruling deity would help solve problems arising from the dosha or give the mental strength to withstand the problems caused due to the dosha.
• Fasting on Mangalvar or Tuesdays would help attract the blessings of Mother Goddess and Lord Muruga. It removes the ill effects of the dosha and blood related diseases get cured. Women should wear red color clothes and worship Mother Goddess in the morning and pray to Lord Muruga in the evening. One should give away in charity red toor dhal.
• One should regularly recite Kandar shasti kavacham for all sorts of protection. This is a divine Tamil poem dedicated to Lord Muruga.
• Remedial mantra for the planet helps one develop a determined attitude, reduce violence and become brave and courageous. It also eases legal entanglements. It has to be recited one hour after sunrise on Tuesdays for 9, 11,108 or 1008 times

Singers: The temple is praised in the hymns of Arunagiriar’s Tirupugazh. Festival: 14 day Thai Poosam-Brahmmotsavam in January-February is grandly celebrated in the temple. A king, Simmavarman by name was cursed with a Lion’s face by Sage Brugu. For relief, the king prayed to Enkan Lord Muruga bathing in the Vruddha Cauveri River (Vottaru). On a Thain Poosam star day (January-February) combined with Full Moon, Lord Muruga appeared before the king and restored his human face. This festival day is grandly celebrated in the temple carrying Kavadi on their shoulders. Other festivals are monthly Kruthika star days, 8 day Skanda Sashti in Aipasi (October-November), Karthikai in November-December, Masi Karthikai (February-March), Deepavali, Pongal, Tamil and English New Year Days. Temple's Speciality: In the month of Panguni (March-April), the rays of Sun fall on Lord Brahmmapureeswarar for three days. It is noteworthy that the idols of Lord Muruga in Sikkal, Ettukudi and Enkan temples were sculpted by the same artist showing the Lord on His peacock vehicle. Greatness Of Temple: The shrine of Lord Muruga is called Sabha as He has the attributes of Lord Shiva and facing South. The Sabha is a hall where Lord Nataraja performed His dance, an importance related to Chidambaram temple. Also, Lord Muruga’s facing south has two philosophies. Lord Dakshinamurthy is a south facing God granting wisdom to devotees. Yama the God of Death belongs to the South. Lord Muruga protects His devotees from fear of death ensuring longevity. Many had experienced these effects praying to the Lord. The one wonder of the temple is that those suffering from impaired vision are blessed with bright eye sight if they perform Shanmugarchana to Lord Muruga continuously for 12 months on each Vishaka star days. Lord Muruga graces from His shrine sitting on the peacock vehicle with His consorts Valli and Deivanai. Of the six faces of the Lord, three are in front and three behind. The Lord holds Vel his special weapon, arrow, sword, discus, pasam the rope, trident, bow, armour, cock flag angusam etc. in His 12 hands. The gap between the fingers are clearly visible, a sculptural marvel. The other wonder is that the entire weight of the idol firmly stands on a single leg of the peacock. Here is the story of the idol. Chola king Mutharasan, seeing the beauty of the idol of Muruga thought there should be no such idol anywhere. So, he claimed the right thumb of the sculptor.Yet, the sculptor made a similar beautiful idol for the Ettukudi temple without the support of the right thumb. The jealous king went further and plucked off the eyes of the sculptor. He came to Sameevanam and started working on a third idol with the help of a little girl. When the idol was nearing completion, the chistle (Uli) fell on the girl’s eyes spilling blood on the sculptor’s eyes restoring his eye sight. Sameevanam is now known as Enkan. Enkan is also the place where Brahamma worshipped Lord Shiva with His eight eyes. This is the place where Lord Muruga taught Pranava Mantra to Brahmma obeying His Father’s directions. Sage Arunagiriar has sung the glory of the place in his Tirupuazh hymns.

Temple History: Lord Muruga demanded Lord Brahmma to explain the meaning of Pranava Mantra. He could not. Lord Muruga put Brahamma in prison and took up the creation job too. Though Brahmma was released later, he could not get back His assignment. Brahamma began worshipping Lord Shiva with His eight eyes. When Lord Shiva asked Muruga to leave the job to Brahamma, Muruga politely refused saying that He was not qualified for the job as He did not know the meaning of Pranava. Lord Shiva advised Muruga to teach the Mantra to Brahmma and reinstate Him in his place. Lord Muruga obeyed His Father and taught Pranava to Brahamma. As Brahmma worshipped Lord Shiva with His eight eyes (En Kan), the place also came to be known as Brahmmapuram. So goes the sthala purana – story of the land.

தல வரலாறு: பார்வதி பரமேஸ்வரர் அருளால் அவதரித்தவர். பிள்ளையில்லா குறை நீங்க, இந்திரன் - இந்திராணிக்கு தெய்வப் பசு காமதேனு மூலம் அவதரித்தவர் என்று இவரது பிறப்பு பற்றிச் சொல்வதுண்டு. யமலோகத்தில் நிலவிய நிர்வாகச் சீர்கேட்டைச் சரிசெய்ய, பிரம்மன் தன் மனதுள் ரகசியமாக உருவகப்படுத்திய உருவத்தை இருத்தி, 11,000 ஆண்டுகள் ஈசனை நோக்கித் தவமியற்றினார். முடிவில், தன் மனதில் இருந்தவரே தன் முன், கையில் எழுத்தாணி ஓலைச்சுவடியுடன், இடையில் தொங்கும் உடைவாளுடன் தெய்வீகக் களை சொட்ட தோன்ற, தவத்தின் பலனை உணர்ந்தவராக அகமகிழ்ந்தார். ரகசியமாக என் உடம்பிலிருந்து (காயம்) தோன்றியதால், சித்ரகுப்தர் என அழைக்கப்படுவாய். உனது சந்ததியினர் காயஸ்தா என அறியப்படுவர் என்று அருளினார் பிரம்மன். தமிழகத்தில் இவர்கள் கருணீகர் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். சித்ரகுப்தர் இவர்களது முழுமுதற் கடவுளாக வணங்கப்படுகிறார். பின்னர் நான்முகனின் ஆணைப்படி சித்ரகுப்தர் காளிதேவியை உபாசித்து, அவளது கருணையால் எண், எழுத்து இரண்டிலும் புலமைபெற்ற உலகின் முதல் மாணாக்கராக ஆனார். பிறகு, அவந்திகாபுரி (உஜ்ஜயினி) சென்று மகா காலேஸ்வரரின் அருளால் கணக்கு வழக்குகளைப் பேரேட்டில் பதியும் திறமையைப் பெற்று, ஐப்பசி மாத யம துவிதியை நாளில் யமதர்மராஜனின் கணக்கராகப் பதவி ஏற்றதாகப் புராணங்கள் கூறுகின்றன. தமிழகத்தில் சித்ரகுப்தருக்கென ஒரு சில கோயில்களே உள்ளன. அதில் முதன்மையானது இக்கோயில்.
